He lost most of his left arm when struck by a musket ball when the HMS Shannon defeated the USS Chesepeake. This image is of a painting done by David Waterson of Brechin, Scotland. There is a story in Scotland that James Coull was the source of James Barries "Captain Hook". If you look carefully at the left arm you will see where the hook would fit. The loss of arm was a result of injury sustained while serving on board the hms shannon in 1812 engaging with the uss chesepeake. | ||
