James Coull - was considered a hero for his role in the naval battle in the war of 1812. He lost most of his left arm when struck by a musket ball when the HMS Shannon defeated the USS Chesepeake. If you look carefully at the left arm you will see where the hook would fit.
The loss of arm was a result of injury sustained while serving on board the hms shannon in 1812 engaging with the uss chesepeake.
